International Digital Project «Measuring the Ghettos: Grodno – Czernowitz – Chișinău» started with the kick-off meeting of the participants from Chernivtsi. 4 students of journalism and 2 pupils of 10th and 11th forms showed a big interest in local history. Instead of the initially planned one-week event in Chernivtsi this workshop took place online due to the Covid-19 restrictions.

The supervisor of the project Markus Winkler introduced the idea and the objectives of the workshop to the participants. He also underlined how important it is to holddear the memory of the past, because we can learn from it now and in the future.

During the online meeting, the participants introduced themselves and got acquainted with the project team and the participants from Belarus and Moldova. After the introductory part the associate professor of journalism at the Chernivtsi National University Roman Paziuk presented the online platforms which the project team will use for communication and information exchange.

In the closing part of the online meeting Mykola Kushnir, the head of the Museum of Jewish history and culture in Bukovina, gave a presentation about the concepts of collective memory and culture of remembrance, as well as its role in the building of civil society. He also discussed the peculiarities of the local culture of remembrance with participants from Chernivtsi and made a brief introduction to the history of the local Jewish community.
